Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is an adjunct practice that utilizes hypnosis to facilitate heightened states of awareness and suggestibility, that allow for increased reception to positive suggestion. Hypnosis itself is a state of narrowed, trance-like focus caused by an overload of message units that allows for a bypassing of critical mental states and belief systems. By working with the Hypnotherapist, the client is guided into detached external attention and into focus on inner experiences.  In this state, clients can turn their attention completely inward to find and utilize the natural resources deep within themselves that can help them make changes or regain control in certain areas of their life.

What can Hypnotherapy help with?

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Bad Habits
  • Sports Performance
  • Self esteem and Confidence
  • Chronic Pain conditions
  • Symptoms of Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Focus/Studying/Test performance
  • Phobias and Fears
  • Pain Management

♦Techniques♦

During a Hypnotherapy session, the client is guided through a process to induce the hypnotic state for the purpose of focusing the mind, altering suggestibility, and deeply relaxing the body. This process utilizes these key techniques.

◊Relaxation:

The client will be guided into a deeply relaxed and peaceful state for the length of the hypnotherapy treatment. This deeply relaxed state is essential for creating increased suggestibility.

◊Suggestions:

When in the hypnotic trance the client becomes more receptive to suggestion and guidance. The hypnotherapist will make gentle suggestions to aid in removing the clients blocks and obstacles As a result they may be able to make positive changes in their life.

◊Coping Skills:

Hypnotherapists may use a variety of cognitive-behavioral techniques that the client will be asked to implement, such as guided imagery and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).

◊Exploration of past experiences:

The client may be encouraged to reflect on their behavior or presenting issue, when it was first experienced and the feelings that are associated.

  • Smoking Cessation and Weight loss.

Things to Consider:

Hypnotherapy is a safe practice; there are some potential risks to be aware of including:

  • Hypnotherapy can produce false or distorted memories

  • Highly suggestible clients may go deeper than conscious awareness and feel a sense of decreased personal control

  • Some clients experience side effects such as dizziness, headaches, and anxiety

  • Hypnotherapy is not appropriate for people who are experiencing symptoms of psychosis (ie, hallucinations and delusions)

For those in psychiatric care, It is important to consult with your Doctor regarding hypnotherapy before your first session.

Common Misconceptions:

Hypnotherapy not to be confused with stage hypnosis.

-Stage hypnotists are performers who are capable of determining suggestibility in crowds of people in order to put on an entertaining performance. Whether the subjects are truly hypnotized is debatable, but their willingness to go along with the performance makes for an entertaining show.

Hypnotherapy doesn’t cause you to forget what happened.

-Though there is a chance for an amnesia like affect during hypnosis, most clients have a keen awareness on what happens during a session. The client is aware of their trance like state and can break it at any point.

Hypnotherapy doesn’t cause you to lose control

-During the session, the client remains in control. It is not possible for anyone to force you to do anything against your will, even under hypnosis. You are always in charge of your own actions, behaviors, and statements.

Some people are not hypnotizable

-Everyone is able to be hypnotized to some degree or another. In fact 25% of all people have an increased suggestibility to you right now.

“Most people walk through the world in a trance of disempowerment. Our work is to transform that into a work of empowerment”

~ Milton Erickson
